How Much Sleep Is Enough?
We spend a significant part of our lives sleeping. One third, to be exact. That’s why we must learn how to optimize our sleeping time.
The great debate related to sleep is how much is enough. And is there such thing as oversleeping? The answer is positive – you really can get too much sleep.
The two states of our brain – asleep and awake are equally important. Which means that if you spend too little time awake is just as bad as spending too little time asleep. Because of that we need to find out the exact amount of sleep we need.
Most studies say that the optimal sleeping time is 7-7,5 hours of sleep. This is enough for the brain to fully repair itself, and be ready for another day.
However, don’t expect a profound improvement in your energy levels just yet. The brain has to adapt to your new lifestyle before you can see any effect. At first you may even feel more tired than usual. This is normal – every change in your life results in stress. But what’s more stressful is an unhealthy biological clock – sleeping for 9 hours straight, or not getting enough at all.
These are only theoretical estimations. You can find your true optimal sleeping time on your own. There are a few indications that will tell you that you are sleeping well. First, you wake up full of energy. You don’t need more than 4-5 minutes before you are fully awake. Another indication is your awareness throughout your day. If you are sleeping well, you will be able to sustain your focus on your tasks effortlessly.
These are only the benefits you’ll get that will make your life easier. There are more… external benefits of a good night sleep.
- your body and face are relaxed – this makes them more attractive
- your eyes are also relaxed, which helps you absorb more information about what’s happening around you
- you won’t start feeling dizzy every time you need to do some physical work even if it’s just a long walk
- your motivation will go through the roof
You’d like that to happen, don’t you. Then the only thing you need to do is find out what’s your optimal sleeping time. It’s no science.
